Rescue Cat Awards 2008

Which Hero Cat will be #1?

There is less than a week until we announce the winners of our Rescue Cat Awards 2008, sponsored by Purina PetCare. From the hundreds of stories of feline heroism we recieved, Max, Speedy, Spartacus and Wallace were selected as the finalists in the Hero Cat category.

The awards ceremony takes place on 1 August at The Pharaohs’ Palace Hospitality Suite at London’s O2 Arena, where we will discover which cat takes the Hero Cat title!

Max





From Sleaford, Lincolnshire

Sleaford’s Max showed his heroic qualities by becoming a full-time carer to his owner’s other pet cat, Milly.

When she was a newborn stray, Milly was attacked by another animal and suffered terrible injuries. She was brought to the veterinary clinic where Max’s owner, Hayley Thomas, works. Over the next six weeks Max decided to help look after Milly by keeping her company and grooming her. As she grew stronger, Max started playing with her and even taught her how to use a litter tray! Two years-on, Milly is a confident and loving cat.

Speedy



From Aldeburgh, Suffolk

Two-year-old Speedy earned her place on the shortlist for being a true heroine to her owners, Joan Payne, and her 19-year-old daughter, Christine.

Christine suffers from a range of conditions including progressive spinal ataxia and epilepsy, meaning she is housebound and prone to sudden seizures. Speedy senses when Christine is going to suffer a seizure and is quick to alert Joan and her husband. She then sits with Christine until she has recovered. Christine also has to spend a lot of time in bed, but Speedy is always there to keep her company.

Spartacus





From Birmingham

Four-year-old Worthing cat, Spartacus, made the final after saving the life of his owner’s other pet cat, Tori.

Spartacus, who was adopted from Cats Protection by Claire Headon, lived up to his heroic name as he woke her to alert her to the fact that Tori – who was due at the vet later that day – had collapsed. Spartacus then revived Tori by biting her ears and nudging her neck with his head. Since then, Spartacus and Tori – who used to keep their distance from one another – are now the best of friends.

Wallace





From Carnoustie, Scotland

Five-year-old Wallace saved the lives of his owner, Maureen Gorman, and her 13-year-old daughter, Pamela, in January this year when he alerted them to a fire.

The usually-timid cat, who had only been adopted a few weeks beforehand, woke Maureen early one morning, before leading her to the source of the fire – an electrical fault in her computer. Fortunately, Wallace's prompt action enabled Maureen put the fire out before it could spread.

De ce place Boc Bucureştiului
Nu, nu e vorba despre deja plicticoasa căutătură între coarne pentru a răspunde la întrebarea “Câte zile petrece Boc la Bucureşti şi câte la Cluj?”.

Timp de patru ani, subiectul a ajuns la o asemenea fâsâială încât edilul a luat 76% dintre voturi. Aşadar, nu despre acea legătură a preşedintelui PD-L se face vorbire...

Ci despre alta: a influenţei liderilor politici clujeni la vârful partidelor. Involuntar, momentul Boc - 1 iunie 2008 a făcut ca această influenţă să se risipească. Adică să rămână una singură – a sa.

Balivernele cu solidaritatea politicienilor clujeni în faţa Bucureştiului, a lobby-ului comun pentru înălţarea şi propăşirea şi înaintarea spre capitalismul multilateral dezvoltat al urbei sunt binevenite pentru cenaclurile sub clar de lună din care răzbeşte puternicul iz de identitate clujeană.

Asta până la prima pală de vânt, pentru că făurirea unei astfel de identităţi începe cu o “introspecţie” a comunităţii şi nu cum s-a încercat adesea, cu facilele antagonisme sovietice de genul “Cine nu e cu noi e împotriva noastră”. Prea mult s-a inoculat ideea că e suficient să faci disidenţă politică împotriva conducerilor centrale ale partidelor, că deja eşti fericitul câştigător al mândriei de a fi clujean.

în realitate, această băţoşenie i-a decapitat a doua oară pe perdanţii alegerilor locale din luna iunie a acestui an. Nu de o victorie a lui Boc aveau nevoie uneltitorii din fruntea partidelor, ci de ACEA victorie, de ACEL 76%, pentru a închide capitolul Cluj pentru ceva vreme. Iliescu, Geoană, Mitrea, Nicuşor Constantinescu, Oprişan ori Dragnea pot ridica un monument al acelui “76%” la care să se închine ca la un idol păgân. Pentru că “76%” le-a pus în mână paloşul cu care să rezolve “grupul de la Cluj”.

Evident, nu au avut nici o nelinişte metafizică, de identitate comunitară ori de social-democraţie modernă: au tăiat, scurt, şi le-au spus: “Acum scuturaţi din umeri, băieţi”.

Mult mai hilară, deşi de aceeaşi factură, a fost şi decapitarea liderului ţărănist de Cluj, Radu Sârbu, altă voce deranjantă pentru liderul partidului, Petre Miluţ.

în cazul Sârbu, cel mai puternic contracandidat al lui Miluţ la şefia partidului, rezultatul obţinut la Cluj a contat, chiar dacă a fost dublu faţă de media pe ţară a partidului, dacă se poate vorbi de dublul lui zero. Miluţ a procedat exact ca Ion care, cu securea în mână, merge la prietenul său de o viaţă, Gyuri, ca să-l taie, revoltat că ungurii l-au omorât pe Mihai Viteazu. “Bine, dar asta o fost demult”, se apără Gyuri.

“Apoi io numa’ amu’ am aflat”, vine justificarea lui Ion. Similar, Miluţ îi reproşează acum lui Sârbu că a fost şef FPS. Şi, poate, în sinea lui, îi mulţumeşte lui Boc.Despre liberalii clujeni, cei atât de apropiaţi de Tăriceanu, nu se aude mai nimic, PRM-ul lui Funar e pe cale de disoluţie, iar UDMR, la Cluj, e la putere, singurul lucru ce contează.

Involuntar, Boc i-a ajutat pe liderii celorlalte partide să-i pună la locul lor pe clujenii care au confundat identitatea cu disidenţa. Doar că Boc are de dus şi povara celor picaţi: a rămas singurul clujean acolo, la vârf. Norocul lui e că nu face disidenţă.
